Yeah. They are pretty similar. Same key, similar movements, etc. But the form on Mingus's moaning is different from Timmon's monanin'

Mingus's Moanin' and Blakey(well..Bobby Timmons' actually) Moanin' is totally different. They aren't 2 different takes on a same tune.

Good point. Use the melody as well then. ;) But chord changes are a good place to start, esp. because different versions of the same song can sound radically different eg. Listen to the Charles Mingus Big Band Version of this song.

lots of songs are paralel songs so you can't use chord changes exclusively. |
