1) That did look like China Man's hat (in Hawai'i); but I imagine many of the pacific islands all kind of look the same.2) The "face tattoos" were actually carved. They would basically carve out chunks of the flesh (imagine a ditch or resivoir); then smear ash/ink into the crevices.
