Windows Movie Maker vs. iMovie - showdown!

There's a myth out there that Windows Movie Maker is the "same" is iMovie. It's often brought up when Mac users praise the iLife suite (which comes free with every Mac), in particular iMovie. Some Windows users will say, "But we've got Windows Movie Maker. That's just the same, right?" NO. It is not. Not even remotely.Windows Movie Maker is very limited compared to iMovie, in the way that it edits and exports video. It can export as WMV (different sizes) and one flavor of AVI. iMovie can export as AVI (XviD and several other codecs), MOV (many codecs—DV, H.264, Sorenson, etc), MP4 (MPEG-4, H.264, etc) and more. iMovie's editing tools are far more sophisticated as well, as I hope this video will further demonstrate. Please note: I am not an expert on iMovie or WMM, just an average consumer. I'm not trying to cover every nuance here—just a few things that are important to me.I welcome rebuttals of this video, but if you're going to do it, please provide specific information and details on where I am wrong. I am here to learn, and if I have been mistaken in some of the information I present here, I would like to know. The site I link to at the end of the video is http://www.animemusicvideos.or... They have free software, many tutorials and other information about anything video-related. Their tutorials are not only good for anime—anyone who wants to make the best quality video should read what they have to say!For a more in-depth review of iMovie vs. Movie Maker, read this: http://www.informit.com/articl... Movie Maker 2 and iMovie 6 were the versions used in this video.Edited with Final Cut Pro. Music from the film "Extreme Prejudice," composed by Jerry Goldsmith.*** Yeah, I know this video is a little rough around the edges—that's what you get when you crank out something in the middle of the night! ;-) ***

When you use iMovie, how did you do the beat to the music thing with the video?

I have a mac but I'v installed vista on it. OSX sucks. however iMovie is just brilliant.compared to wmm. overall the best program I'd say is adobe premiere elements 4.0. (from the programs i have tried.

I've noticed that WMM doesn't run very well on Vista... as in, I can't clip sounds because it can't seem to remember where I cliped the sound and moved it... which makes it _Very_ hard to time video clips to a sound clip. This is also a problem even if I haven't clipped the sound/song and have just paused to edit a video clip. When I restart the song, I have to start from the beginning again just to make sure the timing is correct. it's annoying as heck. Does iMovie run on Vista?

Uh, you *do* realize that this video is *only* about the differences between iMovie and WMM, right? Other applications are good (and I recommend several Windows ones at the end of the video—somehow everyone seems to ignore that), but we're just talking about iMovie vs. WMM only in this video.Sony Vegas is fine, I use it in XP via Bootcamp on my Mac. There is no Mac version. But that's OK, as there is Final Cut Express or Pro which are awesome, & has LiveType (nothing like this for Windows).

Which version of iMovie are you using? iMovie 08? It's a disappointment to many. You can qualify for a free download of iMovie 6 if you own iMovie 08. Do a Google search for iMovie 6 iLife 08 download and you'll find the link from Apple's site.

Vegas, VideoStudio and Adobe Premiere Elements only have Windows versions. (Premiere Pro has a Mac version too.) Yes, they're fine, and I specifically mention them at the end of this video, in case you weren't paying attention! LOL. Mac users have Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro (Mac only) which is fabulous, so they are not left out either.
