Poster Printing, How It All Began.
Poster printing was first done using woodblocks or metal engravings. This process produced little color or design. Lithography was too slow and also expensive. The changes came with the three stone lithographic process. This was a process allowing the artists to get a rainbow of color with just three stones, these were usually red, yellow and blue.
This was a difficult process but the results were a wonderful intensity of color and texture. Combining words and images in this attractive and economical format gave the lithographic poster its very own place. It became the means to communicate with the masses. Known as the “art gallery of the street” it quickly became the advertising of the modern age.
There has been a lot of development with poster printing. From the printing and distribution of them, especially the film posters. There are many more copies printed today than when the National Screen Service was controlling them. The film studios took over the printing of the posters for their movie promotion and printed more than was required by the theaters so there could be sales to those who wanted to collect movie posters.
The printing mainly has changed from lithograph style to digital printing. With graphic designs and digital printing you can even design and have printed your very own poster.

Poster printing has come a long way since when first produced and we have a lot to thank those early artists for. While we may not be able to afford the original, the reproductions are so very good when produced with our modern technology.
